Description

When Lieutenant Caslin Ahn joined Wolf Squadron, she was prepared for the reality that she might one day be killed in the line of duty. She was less prepared for being shot down, assumed dead by her own people, and dragged off to the Cofah Empire as a prisoner of war. As if being thrust into a dungeon and interrogated wasn't bad enough, the sadistic commandant decides to give her a cellmate: the notorious pirate Deathmaker. Given the crimes he's committed against Iskandia, Cas owes it to her people to try and kill him.

Part warrior and part scientist, Tolemek "Deathmaker" Targoson has not only slain thousands with his deadly concoctions, but he has a special loathing for Iskandian pilots. It was Ahn's commander, Colonel Zirkander, who ruined his military career, forcing him to leave his country in shame and join a pirate organization. Years later, he uses his dreadful reputation like a shield to keep people away; all he wants is to be left alone to work in his laboratory. But when fate lands him in a cell with Zirkander's protégé, he sees a chance for revenge. Why kill the lieutenant when he can use her to get to his old nemesis?

There's just one problem: it's hard to plot against your enemies when you're in prison with them. Cas and Tolemek will have to work together if they hope to escape the Cofah dungeon. In the process, they may find that neither is what the other expects, and that they have far greater problems to worry about than ensnaring each other...

Deathmaker is a full-length 85,000-word novel. It is set after the events in Balanced on the Blade’s Edge, but it can be enjoyed even if you haven’t read the first book.

The Dragon Blood series reading order:

This is a great addition to the series. The battle scenes are very exciting, and it is an excellent mix of magic and steam punk. This is a really fun 2nd book.

Finished the first three. Good premise and great story, lovable characters, very well written. I got this as a freebie, in January 2019 I think, and I’m definitely buying the fourth book in the series. A notorious pirate, Deathmaker, recently captured, meets a junior pilot who was shot down. Together, they must learn to work together to escape, despite the fact that they are mortal enemies. Along the way, the pilot discovers that Deathmaker was captured on purpose, and is searching for something that can help him on his quest for an unknown power. What is the pirate’s secret?

I just got out of the military and this book, even though it sounds to be all military forces are one, you can still see and feel the camaraderie between the branches. This book series to me is very helpful in my day to day life of adulting. It adds a reprieve to the onslaught of choices I make everyday and makes me feel as if I am the child i once was in the library in 4th grade, hiding in the corner reading about dragons and adventures and damsels in distress. Though this book is far from an ordinary children’s book. It still helps capture the readers familiar feel of how we see this genre to be. The limits to ones imagination are not only from what someone shows us but from what we discover on our own. I’m starting the 3rd book and hope to see all that I am now with the novels in the future.

This is another well written and exciting tale! Thoroughly enjoyable and definitely in need of a third book involving all four characters and a mission to save his sister. Thank you!

This second foray into Lindsay Buroker's newest world is just as interesting as the first! You may think that air ship pilots, magic swords and pirates aren't really your thing, but this book could prove you wrong. Filled with action, adventure, pirates, daring escapes, Brown Goo Number Three, and a little romance this is definitely one that you won't want to put down!
  • Another thrilling adventure from Lindsay Buroker!

Pirates and fighter pilots in a steampunk fantasy?? I'm not sure it gets much better than that. Buroker has seamlessly continued the intriguing world she created in Balanced on the Blade's Edge with this second installment, even though it primarily focuses on new characters. I might even say I enjoyed Tolemek and Cas's story more than Ridge's and Sardelle's. But, admittedly, I do tend to favor characters with questionable pasts and much to prove. I look forward to the next book set in this world, and more Tolemek and Cas, please.
