Description

“The first year is when some of us lose our lives. The second year is when the rest of us lose our humanity.” —Xaden Riorson

Everyone expected Violet Sorrengail to die during her first year at Basgiath War College—Violet included. But Threshing was only the first impossible test meant to weed out the weak-willed, the unworthy, and the unlucky.

Now the real training begins, and Violet’s already wondering how she’ll get through. It’s not just that it’s grueling and maliciously brutal, or even that it’s designed to stretch the riders’ capacity for pain beyond endurance. It’s the new vice commandant, who’s made it his personal mission to teach Violet exactly how powerless she is–unless she betrays the man she loves.

Although Violet’s body might be weaker and frailer than everyone else’s, she still has her wits—and a will of iron. And leadership is forgetting the most important lesson Basgiath has taught her: Dragon riders make their own rules.

But a determination to survive won’t be enough this year.

Because Violet knows the real secret hidden for centuries at Basgiath War College—and nothing, not even dragon fire, may be enough to save them in the end.

The Empyrean series is best enjoyed in order.

I wish I had 24 hours in a room with just this book and no interruptions so I could read it front to back all at once. I have no words to really express how I feel after finishing it…..it’s astonishing just as Xaden would say to Violet.
  • Great story- So-so writing

I loved the story (until the very end), but the author has got to get out a thesaurus for the next book. Spearing fingers through hair and jaw ticking-along with several other phrases or descriptions, can only be used so many times before it gets annoying and distracting. Other than that, I really enjoyed the story and all of the little clues throughout the books. I look forward to book 3.

I loved Fourth Wing and couldn’t wait to read my preordered edition of Iron Flame. However, I was a little disappointed. Iron Flame was a bit of a stressful read and the ending was disappointing after going through the journey with all the characters in the book. It was a sadly predictable ending.

A tough society for young adults. Fighting for their lives. But also so different and good. Loved it. The ending leaves you confused and with a cliffhanger. But Yarros is a master. I cannot wait for the next book.
